What is Smudging?

What is Smudging? Smudging was traditionally used by indigenous cultures for thousands of years.  Shamans, healers and elders would cultivate medicinal plants, herbs and/or trees, dry them into a bundle and burn them in a cleansing ritual.  It is believed the cleansing smoke would remove unwanted energy and illness, cleansing your mind and body, as well as your surroundings.

The most commonly used tools for smudging are White Sage and Palo Santo.

White Sage has a strong herbal and earthy scent and can create a lot of smoke, which is great for clearing large areas.  Palo Santo has a woody aroma and smells sweet like pine or citrus, great for clearing your altar or small spaces.  I find the smoke from Palo Santo not as overpowering as White Sage which some people prefer, I like to use both at different times.

White Sage is from California and is a sacred plant of the Native Americans.  It can be used for welcoming in the new day, cleansing the body, home or workplace, clearing both positive and negative energies.  It's like bathing in smoke that will help clear away any negative energies that may have attached themselves to you or your space.  Allowing you to choose the energy you wish to bring in.

Palo Santo, also known as the "Holy Wood" is a sacred tree that grows on the coast of South America.  It is believed the tree has both magical and healing properties that would only be cultivated if the tree was allowed to live a full life.  When burning Palo Santo, the sacred smoke is believed to have metaphysical properties that both purify and cleanse your space.  With an uplifting aroma, you can use as part of a cleansing ritual, or as a meditation tool to enhance deeper connection.  It is also known to help with relieving headaches, stress and anxiety.

The harvesting of Palo Santo wood is strictly regulated with the same guiding principles.  When purchasing, I would recommend that you choose a source that ensures this holy wood is treated with respect.  Our source follows the practice of using naturally fallen trees that have been lying peacefully for between 4-10 years.  With each fallen tree that is taken, a seedling is replanted working towards continuously restoring the Palo Santo population.

At Emerly Moon, we have a range of smudge products that use White Sage, Palo Santo and Native Australian plants.  You can find out more about these here

All bundles have been created to honour purely herbs, plants and ingredients. All contents are 100% natural and ethically sourced from Australia, with each smudge stick handmade and unique.  For some, using a bigger flame is more beneficial to generate a good amount of cleansing smoke.  I like to use a candle flame for this purpose.  Firstly light the candle, then use the candle flame to light the smudge stick and hold over the flame until you have a continuous stream of smoke.

Start smudging today so you can see and feel the benefits for yourself!

Blessings to you, love and light ✨
